Suggestions and Tips Regarding Shawls
- Shawls - about 22" wide and 58" to 60" long (not including fringe, if any)
- Fringe (not required) – 4" to 6" long, max. You can use a mix of yarns, beads and charms for the fringe if desired.
- Stitches - Choose any stitch you like but if changing from the suggested pattern stitches, calculate how many stitches are needed to cast on to end up with a correct size.
- Colors - When choosing colors for women’s shawls think of something cheerful or calming. Men’s best colors are shades of brown, beige, ecru, cream, rust and muted shades of turquoise, or in variegated multi shades of grays, whites and black. Variegated yarns work well for both men and women.
- Baby Blankets - 36" or 45" square. Please use soft pastel colors or variegated yarns. If choosing yellow, be sure it’s a very pastel yellow (no gold please) or just mix it with other colors. We currently have a good supply of yellow baby blankets.
- Sewn Shawls and Blankets – There are many beautiful fabrics to choose from. Soft-feeling fabrics are so nice (flannel, sueded cottons) or layered cottons. Use a very thin batting between the layers for baby blankets and please quilt the 3 layers together. Though fleece is soft and lovely, many babies are allergic to anything but cotton. So perhaps we should save fleece for adults only.
