Feeding the Hungry: Our Food Pantry
Another manifestation of our continuing commitment to social justice is the St. Andrew’s Food Pantry and Shower Ministry, which is open two Saturdays each month, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

He comes regularly to the Food Pantry, and always takes a shower. On Saturday he showed up dressed neatly in jeans and a work shirt and heavy workman's boots. As always, he was very quiet and polite, and made a point of thanking us for the meal and the shower. This time, however, he mentioned his name and added that he works on cars. "I know a lot about cars," he said, "and these days there is a lot to know."
He wanted it known.
There is more to him than a man who needs a meal and a shower. Then he continued, "So if you know anyone who wants to know something about cars, or has a problem with a car they need worked on, I'd be glad to help out."
This happens more than you might think. Occasionally there is a guest who seems to be looking for an edge, a way to get more out of the Food Pantry than his/her fair share. But then there are guests who do the opposite. They want to contribute in some way, want to be recognized as having something of value to offer. It's a matter of self-respect. Dignity.
Twenty-nine children received food from the Food Pantry February 26, and there were fifty-six adults, for a total of eighty five. Four guests took showers and makings for chicken soup (including frozen chicken) were raffled off.
The food pantry needs dry pasta, juice in large bottles, juice in individual boxes, jelly, green beans, canned fruit, snack bars, canned meats, canned pasta, rice, crackers, cereal, powdered milk, lotion, bottled water, baby formula, baby food, cat/dog food, powdered detergent, toilet paper, feminine hygiene, shampoo, baby wipes, women's underwear, men's underwear, and men's socks.
