The St. Andrew's Garden Project
Since November of 2010, the gardens at St. Andrew's have been providing the food pantry with beautiful, organic vegetables. Sometimes we cook up the vegetables and serve them with a meal that's been prepared by food pantry volunteers, but most of the time we put the fresh bounty on a table, and the clients take turns selecting their favorite foods, or sometimes decide to try something new.
Since September of 2010 we have grown collards, beets, green beans. cabbage, onions, eggplant, squash, Irish potatoes, tomatoes (cherry, Roma, yellow and regular); peppers (bell, jalapeno, pablano), cucumbers, lettuce, spinach, and Swiss chard. New plantings in June include okra, black-eyed peas, butternut squash, watermelon and sweet potatoes!
The gardens include six raised beds and a large in-ground garden plot and are mainly watered with an efficient automatic watering system. Some of us gather regularly to weed, mulch and harvest produce. We meet as a committee after the 10:45 service on the first Sunday of each month, excluding July. Feel free to join us!
